Introduction
Thomas Poppensieker is a Senior Partner in the Munich Office of McKinsey & Company, which he joined in 1996. He is a member of the McKinsey global risk management leadership group and leads the German Risk Practice. He has served mainly Financial Institutions, but also Corporates across Europe. In 2014/15 he led the global program at Deutsche Bank to enhance the 3LoD and Internal Control Management framework for the Management and Supervisory Boards. He served as a member of the Group of Experts on Banking Issues to the EU Commission and is a Member of the Executive Board for the Frankfurt Institute of Risk Management and Regulation (FIRM)

- Redesign of the internal control systems for non-financial risks for national and international banking players regarding
- Group-wide risk governance structure (3 Lines of Defense)
- Implementation of a new group-wide Enterprise Risk and Internal Control System and related MIS and management processes
- Design of specific control organisations and frameworks (Regulatory Compliance, Fin Crime)
- Redesign of broader Risk and Compliance organisations and operating models banking and insurance companies
- Programs to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of group-wide Compliance and Operational Risk Functions in Financial Institutions
- Design and setup of large-scale remediation programs in response to regulatory findings regarding prudential and conduct regulatory issues
Education and other experience
Thomas worked as a Managing Director at Deutsche Bank from:
- Managing a group-wide programme to enhance 1st LoD business and 2nd LoD control functions and strengthen group-wide control management framework
- Development of the new group-wide control governance structure incl. the group non-financial Risk Exco as top risk committee to cover non-financial risks chaired by the CRO
- Introduction of 1st line control functions under newly created Divisional Control Officer roles and rebalancing 1st vs. 2nd line responsibilities (shift into 1st line)
- Development of group-wide non-financial risk taxonomy to align risk responsibilities and strengthen risk reporting and risk management processes for non-financial risk
- Redesign of group-wide Risk and Control Assessment framework and related system solution
Thomas studied business administration in France and Germany. He holds a diploma in business administration from the University of Bayreuth, Germany and received his Ph.D.-degree in Finance from the University of Cologne, Germany, based on his thesis on value-based credit portfolio management.
